A vacation is a time for some much needed R & R, fun and quality time with those you love and, believe it or not, maintaining a healthy lifestyle without putting a damper on your time off.
Splurge, but don’t overdo it:
Indulging in some of your favorite vacation foods is perfectly fine, after all you may only get to eat them once a year, but don’t go overboard. Try to do your own cooking as much as possible (if applicable) and avoid fast food, packing healthy snacks for sight-seeing adventures or beach days instead.
Use your time wisely and try to add as many physical activity events to the itinerary as possible. Depending on where you are visiting, the options could be anything from biking the boardwalk down the shore or swimming with dolphins on a beautiful, tropical island. Where ever you go, find out what’s happening and what you can do to help your family remain active while visiting.
Catch-up on sleep:
Take advantage of the time off to rejuvenate, refresh and give your body the rest it may not get during a regular work week. However when people are away from home, staying at hotels or vacation rental homes, sleep becomes difficult as it’s not what they are used to in terms of comfort and personal preference. Some people just can’t sleep comfortably in a bed that’s not their own. If this is the case, try bringing your own pillows, sheets, stuffed animals, night lights or whatever helps remind you of the comforts of home and thus get a better night’s rest. Sleeping in on a vacation is good for the body, but not too much.
Avoid consuming too many sugary drinks like sodas and/or, if of age, alcoholic beverages. Again, indulgence in moderation is always great, but especially in the warmer summer months when most people tend to schedule vacations, it’s important to ensure you’re keeping up with your water intake. Spice it up by infusing it with your favorite fruits to make a delicious and refreshing beverage that should always been kept on-hand as you explore new activities and places.
Wishing a fun and relaxing vacation to all this summer!
