Super Bowl Sunday has become synonymous with good food. Even if your team isn't playing, chances are you're going to be spending your day with friends and family, indulging in all the delicious food that comes with this unofficial national holiday. It's the one day of the year where you get to enjoy the 30-second commercials brands spend millions of dollars on and enjoy spreads that can be hard to pass up. This Super Sunday, don't deprive yourself, but don't overdo it either.
Don't stress: One day out of your normal, healthy routine isn't going to kill you. A "cheat day," can satisfy those cravings you've been suppressing all week and help you re-focus for a week of clean eating ahead. After all, you're only human and depriving yourself will only lead to binge-eating all the foods in front of you. Moderation, moderation, moderation!
Portion control: Speaking of binge-eating, make sure you have a plate and aren't just mindlessly eating chips straight from the bag. Get a little bit of everything you enjoy on a plate, but skip the foods you don't! Why waste your splurges on foods that don't really float your boat? Incorporate some of the healthier choices like veggies and fruit when possible.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to help your body digest the increased sodium you will most likely consume. Skip the sugary drinks like soda and even alcohol, so you can enjoy more of your favorite foods comfortably. Eat slowly and taste your food. Take small bites and really chew your food before swallowing to help your body break it down faster-- no one wants heartburn and indigestion on Super Sunday! Remember, this is not a wing-eating contest (hopefully!) and your food isn't going anywhere. Enjoy it!
Move around: A lot of sitting typically happens on Super Sunday, but that doesn't have to be the case. Get your workout done in the morning so you get your body moving first thing and avoid the guilt later on. During the Super Bowl, skip the drinking games and instead play an exercise game. Do an exercise for every foul, fumble, interception, etc. that happens throughout the game. You'll have fun competing against your guests while breaking that sedentary state.
No matter what, enjoy your time with family and friends and don't beat yourself up for your food choices, tomorrow is a new day!
