Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death in the country. The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout is working to change that.
In the Pottstown area, over 17% of area residents over 18 currently smoke, and adults whose household income is below federal poverty guidelines were more likely to smoke—30%—compared to adults who were at or above the poverty line—13%. Read about the effects of tobacco in our community.
Thankfully, local resources are available for everyone. The PA Free Quitline—1-800-QUIT-NOW—offers free tobacco cessation counseling by trained coaches who are available 24/7. More resources are available through the Southeast Pennsylvania Tobacco Control Project.
No matter how long you’ve been smoking, quitting has immediate health benefits, and those benefits accumulate the longer you stay off tobacco, adding years to your life.
While the Smokeout lasts just one day, quitting smoking is a process. To kick the habit long term, make a plan, encourage your friends and family to keep you accountable, and take advantage of the support available.
