The effects of weight lifting on muscle development are well known, but did you know that weight lifting is one of the best ways to prevent and reverse bone loss?
Osteoporosis is a concern for all Americans, with the average person losing bone density at a rate of 1% per year after age 40. But certain types of exercise, particularly those that cause moderate stress to bones, stimulate the body to increase bone density.
The best exercises for bone density are those that emphasize power over endurance. Weight training, jumping, stair training, and body weight exercises are all top examples. Incidentally, these are just the type of exercises practiced in CrossFit, and the Pottstown Athletic Club has certified instructors to get you started on an exercise regimen.
The YMCA is another great resource for folks in the Pottstown area to get started on a weight training regimen. With programs that combine weightlifting with music in a group setting, the YMCA is a great place to stay social while keeping healthy.
If you’d rather begin working out on your own, here are a few tips and exercises to help you get started.
