Fall brings about cooler weather, colorful foliage, an abundance of autumn fruits and vegetables, and, of course, the start of the holiday season. But the season can also bring about ample opportunities to help you and your family stay on the path towards healthier living.
Whip up a delicious dish: One of the best parts about fall is all the fresh produce available at farmer's markets and grocery stores. Have leftover pumpkin seeds from a Halloween carving session? Roast them up! Try out a new recipe with the kids with other seasonal items such as squash, sweet potatoes, apples, etc. to create a delicious and healthy fall meal the whole family will love!
Whistle while you work: Did you know a typical fall activity such as raking the leaves can help you get your exercise for the day? According to the ChooseMyPlate.gov, raking the leaves for 30 minutes burns 150 calories. Not bad for an every day, household chore! You can even get the kids involved and make a game out of it based on the different colors of the leaves that fall in your yard. It's fun, gets the yard clean and keeps you and your family moving! Walk the walk: There's nothing more satisfying than the crunch of the leaves under your shoes and the feel of the crisp, cool air during a fall nature walk. Make use of the Schuylkill River Trail, named USA Today's Best Urban Trail, or join up with The Mercury Mile, a program of The Mercury's Fit for Life initiative, on Wednesdays at noon to enjoy an outdoor lunchtime walk.
No matter what you decide to do to keep active this fall, remember, small steps lead to big changes. It's the effort and willingess you put forth that will help you succeed in your quest towards healthier living!
