Recently, one of my twin seniors asked to go to a soccer evaluation camp. I was stunned. Since age 8, soccer has been his sole passion and that’s all he did, year-round, for 9 years. He drove himself. If someone beat him, he would work to be sure that person would never beat him again. They never did. ZERO other interests - soccer was his world! I have never been a soccer mom – his idea; his game. All I ever told him was “have fun” - I do my best just to follow the ball! He excelled with numerous talents and was recruited by dozens of colleges: He could easily have played college soccer.
Then suddenly his passion faded and although he still performed at the top, something was missing. He was done.
Imagine my surprise when 3 months after quitting soccer (mom heart-breaker to the max), he asks to go to this. Really? So this weekend we drove 6+ hours to southern VA for an 8-hour long scouting camp. Why? No clue – he’s a vault.
For whatever reason, both boys came because we were combining the camp with a college visit two hours away from the camp in MD. ROADTRIP!!!WOO HOO!!!!
This is precious time AWAY with my two seniors who may be who knows where next year, and the talks and fun times are short and rare these days: They are teenagers. Precious times!
During these long winter months, rejuvenate yourself and get outta here!! Go somewhere for no reason or a random reason – just get out!!! Do not think it has to cost you - there are ways around that.
Bottom Line? Make it NEW! RULE: Nowhere you’ve ever been, seen, and no research allowed – it’s a surprise for yourself! You deserve a surprise!
