Getting a good night's rest has always been a challenge for me because I'm, without a doubt, a night owl. It's become a natural habit of mine to stay up late and then regret it first thing in the morning when I struggle to drag myself out of my cocoon of warm blankets and 10 pillows. It never seems to get easier, and I suspect I'm not alone in this struggle.
I noticed a few habits I tend to partake in before bed that aren't helping my case. So, here are a few things, in my experience, NOT to do before bedtime:
Stare at your phone: Or any other digital device for that matter. The light these devices emits trick your body into thinking it's time to kick into high gear instead of powering down to rest. It not only keeps your brain energized and awake, but strains your eyes in the process.
Eat after 9 p.m.: No matter how hard it may be, resist the tempation to snack and indulge after 9 p.m. The food will sit in your stomach all night and take longer than usual to digest especially if your body is in a lounging/laying down position in your bed or on a couch. No one wants to go to bed feeling bloated and sickly due to overeating.
Drink soda or other caffeinated beverages: If you're having trouble sleeping it could be because you're wired on sugar or caffeine that comes with drinking soda, coffee, etc. After all, caffeine is a stimulant that most people use to wake themselves up in the morning and stay alert throughout the day. Before bed, stick with water or calming tea to help your body recongize it's time to rest instead of thinking it's time to start the day. Save the coffee for your morning commute!
These are all things I personally need to get better at and hope it will inspire you to do the same. I know I will be trying to get as many Zzzs as possible tonight. Sweet dreams!
