After a refreshing week of my feet in the sand, the sea breeze blowing through my hair and soaking up the sun with my family down the shore, I am back at it and ready to take on another week. Although, I definitely agree with those who say you need a vacation after a vacation, I’m grateful for the much needed family time and R & R.
For my fellow beach lovers out there, here are some ways my family and I stayed active on our family vacation and how you can to!
Now, don’t get me wrong, we did PLENTY of lounging on the beach, napping and enjoying our surroundings for the time (man does a week fly by!) we had to do so. However, we made sure to break up the time we spent lounging with long stretches of walking the beach (or boardwalk), having a catch in the ocean (it’s more of a workout than it sounds with the waves crashing into you), boogie boarding, etc. You name it, we did it! It’s was so fun to hang out and relax with each other but also keep moving.
Cook at home:
Eve though it was a bit more work, we cooked the majority of our meals in the comfort of our beach house and also packed lunches and yummy snacks like fresh fruit and sandwiches for our on-the-beach meals. Not only did we save money, but it got the whole family involved and unplugged from our digital devices. My stepmom and Nonna would cook, my brother set the table and my Dad and I cleaned up. We had a system down and stuck to it all week. Of course, we indulged for dessert each night and also ate out a couple times, but you just have to live a little on vacation!
One of our favorite things to do down the shore every year (our family goes to Ocean City, NJ), is visit the farmer’s market hosted each Wednesday morning. It gives you a taste of the local life and we always end up leaving with bushels and boxes full of the freshest fruits and veggies you will ever taste! My stepmom makes a mean tomato and cucumber salad…hello Jersey tomatoes! Even better, our house this year came with a list of area events happening during August and it was a great resource for us to use and refer to throughout our vacation. You can even do some research and create your own list with possible ideas and activities for your family to partake in. Trust me, it’s worth it!
Although I’m happy to be back in the office on this Monday, I think it’s always healthy to be in a beach state of mind…just a little J
