To celebrate a co-worker's birthday, our staff headed to lunch yesterday afternoon. As the birthday boy is a vegetarian, we decided to try a vegetarian/vegan restaurant that had recently opened in the area.
At first, I was skeptical. I am not a vegetarian/vegan or anything remotely close to it and was thinking I'd have to compensate my lack of lunch with a big breakfast beforehand. However, I was of course, willing to give it a try. I went with the Buffalo "chicken" sandwich AKA seitan as I LOVE anything Buffalo chicken! Known as the "vegetarian wheat meat", seitan is a meat substitute made from gluten, the main protein of wheat. Apparently, it even works so well that some vegetarians avoid it as the texture is to close to that of actual meat.
I am happy to report that there was no need for a big breakfast. My meal was delicious! As were the rest of my co-worker's (Yes, I sampled many of theirs as well to try as much as I could!). I would definitely order this meal again and go back to the restaurant to try other options on the menu. I now have a new appreciation for foods that this Italian girl normally wouldn't have touched with a ten-foot pole! It just goes to show that when you go out of your comfort zone and try something new, you may be pleasantly surprised. Special shout-out to my co-worker for being born and for encouraging me to explore new foods :)
As my family always tells me, "Don't knock it till you try it!"
Seitan (I wasn't quick enough to get a picture of my actual meal!)
