There’s a chill in the air this week, and it’s the perfect time to make a big batch of apple cider to fill your home with the warm scent of fall spices. This recipe includes cinnamon, cloves, and fresh ginger, but you can add your own twist with spices that match your taste.
Berks County trees are loaded with fresh apples-visit an orchard near you today!
Don’t settle for apple juice; visit your local orchard or farm stand to find freshly pressed cider from Pennsylvania apples. There are several orchards close to Pottstown where you can bring your kids along to pick apples and teach them about local agriculture.
- ½ gallon apple cider
- 2 apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 orange, cut into wedges
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1-inch piece of ginger root, sliced
Combine all ingredients into a slow cooker and cook for 4 hours on low or for 2 hours on high. The apples should start to disintegrate, but you can help them along by mashing them with a fork. When you’re ready to serve, remove the cinnamon sticks, ginger, oranges, and any apple chunks that haven’t dissolved. Leave your slow cooker on the lowest setting and enjoy this festive treat throughout the evening!
