December MGN Episode Shows You How To Eat and Prepare Holiday Foods That Are Healthy and Taste Great - Honest!

November 28, 2007, Pottstown, PA – The December episode of Mission: Good Nutrition, a 29-minute TV program sponsored by Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation promoting healthy living, will begin running Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. on PCTV Channel 28 and is scheduled to air at the same time each subsequent Thursday in December.

“This month’s episode really shows our viewers that you can eat sensibly over the holidays,” comments Dave Kraybill, executive director, Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation. “Eating sensibly does not mean skipping your favorite foods; it just means having a plan – a nutritious mindset when you are faced with a bountiful array of tempting foods on a holiday table. We also focus on ways to re-make holiday side-dish recipes that still taste great, but cut out some of the fat. In fact, we’ll show you some other great healthy food substitutions to try in your recipes.”

In the first segment, Betsy Tecco, a health and nutrition writer, talks about how to make your own personal plan to eat sensibly for the holidays. Some key points that she will discuss are ways to enjoy the foods you look forward to without overindulging, learning how to prioritize your food choices on a holiday table and tips for not over-eating at parties.

The second segment features Tina Trager, a nutritional consultant and fitness instructor at the Spring Valley YMCA. Trager discusses some low-fat recipe substitutions that make your recipes healthier, but not tasteless. Examples include using egg whites instead of the whole egg and low-fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream. She also gives specific substitutions for green bean casserole and everyone’s favorite – stuffing.
Finally, Jo-an Rechtin, the wellness coordinator for Owen J. Roberts School District and a free-lance food writer and cooking instructor shows viewers some holiday recipes made over to be healthier and taste great! You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make delicious low-fat honey-glazed sweet potatoes, stuffing and corn bread. All these recipes and more can be found on www.pottstownfoundation.org.

This month viewers will get the “skinny on broccoli.” Broccoli is one of the best vegetables to eat for a variety of reasons. Viewers will learn how they can download a coupon on the Foundation’s Web site for a free bunch of broccoli at local Redner’s Warehouse Market locations in Pottstown, Boyertown and Douglassville.
