Biographical Profile of David Kraybill

David W. Kraybill
Executive Director
Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation

For the past five years, Dave Kraybill has been the Executive Director of the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation (PAHWF). Established in July 2003 from the proceeds from the sale of PMMC, the Foundation has assets of $89 million and an annual grants budget of $3.2 million. Through an emphasis on strong strategic planning, Mr. Kraybill has been able to focus the Foundation on four areas: nutrition and physical activity in schools, access to primary and behavioral health care services, non-profit infrastructure, and recreation and planning for communities.

The Foundation serves a geographic area encompassing Eastern Berks County, Western Montgomery County and Northern Chester County in Southeastern Pennsylvania with a growing population currently estimated at 150,000 people.

Through health promotion and education the Foundation is seeking to encourage children and families to adopt healthy habits that will last throughout a lifetime. This includes up to $1million a year in annual grants to public and private schools. At the same time, through duel initiatives in primary care and mental health, the Foundation is seeking to provide more consistent care to more residents of the Tri-County area with the creation of a FQHC look-a-like, which is co-located with a regional mental health provider. The Foundation has encouraged regional planning, most recently in the form of a regional recreation analysis that will be used by the Pottstown Regional Planning Commission.

Beyond these goals, a key Foundation objective is leveraging funds with its grants. In the past four years of grantmaking, $9.6 million has leveraged another $5.5 million in individual, foundation, government, and corporate giving.

The Foundation is committed to funding a needs assessment every five years and is currently in the midst of its second needs assessment. Findings are released to the community as a public service and are expected to be available in Spring of 2009.

The Foundation has won awards for its interactive web-site and for its giving in the Latino community. Most recently, it won a national "Healthy Trails" award for its signage along the Schyukill River.
